Making sure incidents are reported in a timely and accurate manner may mean the difference of a claim being paid or not.
Incident reporting starts by knowing and documenting who is in your school / club at any one time. This means accurate attendance records, observations of students’ behaviour and other things they do. This may include a student’s attention span, their ability to hear / understand instruction, other sports / activities they participate in outside your classes, their general health / medication they are taking / pre-existing injuries and overall happiness with your facility.
All this can have an impact on whether a member would sue the school for compensation if they had an injury. There are cases where a student has injured themselves in another sport (football for example) and made a claim against another gym / club because they thought it was easier to obtain compensation. Of course these are fraudulent claims but operators need to be aware of them
and the appropriate reporting helps minimise such issues.
You can minimize the chance of a false / fraudulent claim against you by having cameras running during classes. Asking students before class if they have any injuries or not feeling well so you can document this. Likewise, after a class you can ask them in a motivational way, how the class was and how people felt. If no one said they were hurt, then nothing happened in your class that result in a potential claim. This forms a ‘set procedure’ in your club which gives each student the opportunity to record if they were injured, irrespective of how mild it may feel at the time. This means at a future day when someone says they were injured in your class, you can challenge it with solid evidence of the incident.
